Reid Pitches Villa Park Past El Modena, 6-1

Dan Reid pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts as top-ranked Villa Park defeated El Modena, 6-1, Tuesday in Century League baseball.

Reid (3-0) walked two and did not allow a runner to second base until the fifth inning.

Designated hitter Scott Foley broke open the game in the sixth with a two-run double.

Villa Park improved to 8-1, 2-0. El Modena is 4-5, 1-1.

In other Century League games:

Canyon 9, Foothill 7--Second baseman Andy Clay doubled home two runs in a six-run sixth inning for the host Comanches (5-4).

First baseman John Holato homered and doubled and Matt Fry (4-0) earned the victory.

Mark Mitchell (0-1) took the loss and Matt Meadows homered for Foothill (2-6, 0-2).

Orange 20, Santa Ana Valley 8--Chad Bradley went five for five with three RBIs and three runs for Orange (6-1, 1-1).

Robert Padilla scored three runs and drove in two with a double for the Falcons (3-5, 0-2).

Orange scored nine runs in the sixth inning, capped by a C.J. Joiner two-run single, scoring Ricky Suarez and Rey Torres.

Brian Nock struck out five in five innings for Orange.

In the Express League:

La Verne Lutheran 12, Liberty Christian 1--La Verne Lutheran (4-0, 3-0), scored six unearned runs in the sixth as Liberty Christian (1-3, 1-1) committed five errors.

Bryan Beckert (1-2), took the loss for the Minutemen.

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 4, Brethren Christian 0--Sophomore Kyle Christensen pitched six innings, striking out seven and allowing only one walk, to pick up the victory for host Calvary Chapel (4-3, 2-0). Blake West had two hits, drove in a run and scored a run for the Eagles.

Whittier Christian 3, Sierra Madre Maranatha 2--Host Whittier Christian (3-3, 1-1), pulled off a triple play that helped them gain the victory.

With the bases loaded and the Heralds protecting a one-run lead, the Maranatha batter hit a line drive to shortstop Milton Smith, who flipped the ball over to third baseman Anthony Esquer for the second out, then Esquer threw to first baseman Joey Conrad to complete the triple play.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 5 University 12, Costa Mesa 1 (5 innings mercy)--Jay Nichols, Kevin Conlin and Matt Stone hit second-inning home runs for the visiting Trojans (7-3, 1-0).

Matt Gamble (2-0) earned the victory.

Costa Mesa is 3-3-1, 1-1.

Laguna Beach 5, Estancia 3--Kirk Ziegler proved to be a double threat, giving up two hits over five innings and going four for four with a grand slam that provided the winning margin for the Artists (3-4, 2-0).

Alex Dy-Buncio pitched the final two innings for his second save.

Estancia fell to 2-5, 0-2.
