Keep Kids in Back

* Re “Loose Tire Hits Car on Freeway, Kills 5-Year-Old,” April 13:

My heart aches for the family of the little girl killed in the accident on the Riverside Freeway.

Some people are under the false idea that children are safe in the front seat as long as there is no passenger air bag. This is an excellent opportunity to remind parents everywhere of child-safety recommendations.

The California Highway Patrol and child-safety organizations constantly advocate children being placed in the back seat until they are at least 12 years of age.

They also recommend that they be in child booster seats until age 6 or 60 pounds. In fact, until a child’s knees can reach the edge of the back seat, they should be in some sort of safety seat so that the automobile’s seat belt can properly restrain them. No matter how much our children beg and plead to ride up front, they should always be in the back.
