Man Suspected of Ramming Patrol Car

After a foot pursuit through a residential neighborhood, a police SWAT team arrested one of two men who allegedly rammed a car into a police vehicle during a traffic stop Tuesday.

The chase began about 2 p.m. after officers pulled over a car near Carpenter Avenue and Oxnard Street, police said, because it had failed to yield to an oncoming vehicle during a turn.

The driver threw the car into reverse, slamming into the patrol car, said Sgt. Christopher Vasquez of the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood Division. Then both suspects jumped out of the car and ran away.

Police set up a blockade east of the Hollywood Freeway and captured one of the men, believed to be the driver, in the 11800 block of Tiara Street about 5:30 p.m. Police used tear gas to drive him out of a shed he was hiding in, said LAPD spokesman Jason Lee.

Marcos Hernandez, 27, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon against a police officer, Lee said. No one was hurt in the incident.

Hernandez, whose city of residence was not known, was on parole for stealing a car, Lee said.

Police are still looking for the second suspect.
