Efforts to Revive Drowned Man Fail

Alcohol may have contributed to the drowning death of a 43-year-old man in a community pool, police said Friday.

Earl Chafee of Valencia was found face down Thursday night at the bottom of a pool on Hillsborough Drive by a security guard patrolling the area, said Sgt. Carlos Marquez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in Santa Clarita.

The guard managed to drag Chafee out of the water but attempts by paramedics to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Chafee was rushed to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said they found several empty alcohol containers around the pool and are investigating whether alcohol may have played a part in Chafee’s death. There were no visible signs of trauma to his body and police said they did not suspect foul play.

An autopsy and toxicology tests will determine the cause of death, police said.
