Weinberg, Calderon Lead Santa Ana, 10-6

Jeremy Weinberg struck out 12 in seven innings Friday as top-seeded Santa Ana defeated Mt. San Jacinto, 10-6, in the first game of a best-of-three first-round series in the Southern California Regionals at Santa Ana.

Weinberg earned the victory, improving to 10-1. Dale Thayer picked up his sixth save.

Tony Calderon had three hits and three RBIs for Santa Ana (33-7-1), which took the lead for good, 4-3, in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Justin Gerlach. Carlos Pasillas later added his ninth home run of the season for Santa Ana.

The teams will meet again at 11 a.m. today at Santa Ana, with a third game to follow if necessary. If Santa Ana wins the series, it will host the second round May 19-20.

In other playoff games:

Cypress 21, Rio Hondo 2--The fourth-seeded Chargers (33-10) collected 23 hits, including home runs by Matt Colin and Geoffrey Boutelier. Ryan Hubbard had two hits, two walks, a sacrifice fly, three RBIs and two runs.

Starting pitcher Ray Aguilar (10-2) went seven innings, giving up three hits and striking out four.

The teams will meet today at 11 a.m. at Cypress, with a third game to follow, if necessary.

Palomar 12, Golden West 2--Victor Yoshida had three RBIs and Steve Guthrie had a triple and two RBIs for Palomar (29-9).

Ty Harper, Jeremy Hanson and Josue Pena hit doubles for the Rustlers (21-21).
