The Florida Marlins stole everything but the game.

Florida stole 10 bases Thursday--one short of the modern National League record--yet lost to Stan Spencer and the San Diego Padres, 6-2, at Miami.

Luis Castillo and Cliff Floyd stole three bases and Mark Kotsay and Preston Wilson swiped two for the Marlins, who were 10 for 10 on steal attempts.

The post-1900 NL record of 11 was set by the New York Giants in 1912 and tied by St. Louis in 1916. The modern major league mark of 15 was set by the New York Highlanders, later the Yankees, in 1911.

“It’s frustrating to lose like this,” Marlin Manager John Boles said. “Ten stolen bases and only two runs. You think you’ve seen it all, but I haven’t seen this.”

The last time any team had 10 steals in a game was June 30, 1996, when Colorado did it against the Dodgers.

A day after Castillo set a team record with four stolen bases in a game, the Marlins set a team mark by swiping four in the first inning. Castillo scored both runs after steals.

Ryan Klesko hit a solo home run for the Padres. Eric Owens hit a two-run single in the second inning and Ruben Rivera had a two-run single in the eighth. Phil Nevin tripled home a run in the Padre ninth.

Arizona 8, Montreal 6--Steve Finley hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning at Montreal and the Diamondbacks stopped their second three-game losing streak of the season.

Tony Womack doubled off reliever Anthony Telford (4-3) to lead off the ninth and Jay Bell walked. Both runners advanced on Luis Gonzalez’s sacrifice against reliever Matt Blank.

Greg Colbrunn was walked intentionally and Finley, who homered earlier, followed with a fly to left. Travis Lee then hit a run-scoring single.

Cincinnati 4, Pittsburgh 3--Alex Ochoa’s RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Reds the win at Cincinnati.

The Reds improved to 5-0 in extra-inning games and kept up their recent surge, now nine wins in 11 games.

Sean Casey led off the 10th with a single off Mike Garcia. Dante Bichette singled one out later and Benito Santiago was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Ochoa took two balls before slicing a drive to right-center that bounced over the wall. The game-winning hit was scored a single.

Atlanta 3, San Francisco 2--Greg Maddux pitched the Braves to their sixth straight victory and sent the Giants to their sixth loss in a row.

Maddux (5-1) pitched seven innings and improved to 10-0 against the Giants in 10 starts at Atlanta.

Maddux won for the first time since April 28, a span of three starts that included two no-decisions.

Colorado at New York, ppd., rain--The game between the Rockies and the Mets was postponed by rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Aug. 15.

Houston at Milwaukee, ppd., rain--The doubleheader between the Astros and Brewers was rained out and rescheduled for Monday, which was to be an off-day.
