Leisure World to Host Table Tennis Event

Leisure World Laguna Woods will host a senior table tennis tournament June 2-4, where more than 180 participants, ages 40 and older, are expected to compete for $14,000 in cash prizes in the 11th Meiklejohn National.

The tournament, which will take place in Leisure World’s Clubhouse Five, features 26 events. Among the top players in the four-star, USA Table Tennis-sanctioned event will be Chen Ying Hua, a former member of China’s national team.

BASKETBALL

The Mater Dei boys’ basketball team has been selected to compete in the Holiday Prep Classic in December at Las Vegas.

The 68-team field, which features teams from 17 states, will be Dec. 18-21 at Durango and Green Valley high schools.

* Four women basketball players from Irvine Valley have committed to play at four-year colleges.

Lauren O’Hara (Irvine High) has signed with Concordia. The 6-2 center averaged 10.3 points and nine rebounds for her career at IVC.

Jennifer Rakowitz (Trabuco Hills High), who led the Lasers in three-point shooting (33.7%) last season, has signed with Division III Menlo. Rakowitz is a 5-7 guard.

Katie McCluskey (Fountain Valley High) and Jennifer O’Keefe (Villa Park High) have signed with Chico State.

McCluskey, a 5-8 guard, averaged 2.9 points and 2.8 rebounds last season.

O’Keefe, a 5-9 guard, was named all-state and all-Orange Empire Conference last season.

SOCCER

Gina Scachetti of Torrance Bishop Montgomery High has committed to play at UC Irvine next season, she said Friday.

Scachetti, a center/halfback, was the Del Rey League and the Southern Section Division IV offensive player of the year.

HONORS

A pair of two-sport standouts were named Orange Coast College’s male and female athletes of the year.

David Castleton (Mater Dei High), who starred in football and basketball, was selected along with Zoila Gomez (Costa Mesa High), who led OCC to conference titles in cross country and track.

Castleton led the Orange Empire Conference in scoring with 22.6 points per game in In football, he caught 53 passes for 958 yards and scored four touchdowns last fall. He will continue his basketball career at Cal State Fullerton.

Gomez has earned more than a dozen individual and team championships for the Pirates this year.
