Lessons From One Man’s Model Society

The hallway is flooded at Phillips Academy, one of America’s oldest and most exclusive private schools, in Andover, Mass. The silvery surface of the water contrasts with the pale pink color of the walls and the delicate neoclassical moldings over the classroom doors. Four-by-5-foot photographs capture this eerie scene, one that is entirely invented by artist James Casebere. Along with his photographs of constructed models of arched tunnels, both flooded and dry, they are on view at Grant Selwyn Fine Art from Tuesday to July 8.

Casebere, 46, is one of a group of artists who, in the late ‘70s, began questioning the documentary capacity of photography. Instead of taking pictures of extant scenes, he built elaborate models and photographed them, presenting the prints rather than the constructions as his art. Other artists were coming up with similar strategies at the time--Laurie Simmons, James Welling, Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince--all departing from the tradition of straight photography and its commitment to reality.

As the first generation of postmodern artists, they treated photography as one tool among many to create the images they wanted. During the past 25 years, their subversive strategies have proved successful as the artists’ photographs have found their way into museums and art history.

The cordial Casebere, with cropped dark beard and sharp blue eyes, works in a roomy apartment in an East Village building he bought in the 1980s. The living room is crowded with carefully detailed Styrofoam and cardboard models of buildings, including the inside of Phillips Academy. A view camera on a tripod, draped with a black dropcloth to block out light, is trained on the model of the hallway scene, with poured resin water. Looking into the viewfinder, one sees the miniature flood glowing under aluminum-shaded lights.

Inviting a visitor into his book-lined office, Casebere offers fresh-baked croissants bought that morning at the bakery near his house in Brooklyn, where he lives with artist Lorna Simpson and their baby daughter, Zora. He flops onto a sofa and hesitatingly explains the genesis of the new work, which is also on view through July 31 at Phillips Academy’s Addison Gallery of American Art.

“I went up to Andover last fall and then built two models based on different spaces I liked: the pink hall with the vaulted ceiling and the crown molding, and the blue hall with the sunburst pattern over the doors. Around the same time, I was doing pictures of flooded arches, which look as though they are underground. But in those pictures, the water looks like it belongs under the arches. The water doesn’t look as though it belongs in the classrooms. To me, the imagery is Gothic.”

The pictures are luminous with shades of iridescent pastel from the artificial light thrown on the resin water and the plaster-coated walls. They seem a rapturous departure for Casebere, who has spent most of the last decade making sober pictures of painstakingly handcrafted--and unflooded--prison cells and asylums. Still, they are part of his ongoing interest in using architecture as metaphor for social, historical and cultural inquiry.

Referring to the 220-year-old Phillips Academy, the artist says, “I’m interested in the origins of different institutions. This is as old as an American institution can be and reflects the way the private school was originally a seminary.”

Casebere’s pictures look to the evolution of architecture and the way styles of buildings reflect the philosophy of any era. In the prison photographs, for instance, the ordered layout of the 19th century institutions derives from the Quakers’ reform initiatives, seeking to bring order and solitude to previously hellish conditions. By documenting neutral interiors of white walls, deep shadows and rows of slot-shaped windows, Casebere subtly underscores connections between religious and social organization. His stark, unpopulated images also suggest tales to be told, and it is little surprise to discover that Casebere writes short stories. Critic Jason Oddy wrote in London’s the Independent: “By paring these empty places down to their most fundamental elements, Casebere believes that it becomes incumbent on us to fill them with our own meanings and explanations.”

Growing up in Livonia, Mich., a suburb of Detroit, Casebere drew architectural plans and took industrial drafting classes. His mother taught elementary school. His father, who died in 1976, was a progressive high school principal who worked with an architect on two occasions to build open-plan high schools in support of his experimental goals. Casebere went over the plans with his father and watched the building process.

This background ultimately fueled his interest in how architecture and philosophy interact. “It definitely had an effect. Our library at home was filled with the radical literature of the time, which I read,” he says.

Casebere began making and photographing constructions as an undergraduate at Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where he studied with architectural sculptor Siah Armajani.

“My experience of art was primarily through photographs,” Casebere recalls, “so it made sense to photograph the things that I made. In part, it was living apart from the centers of art and not seeing famous sculpture in Europe but seeing it reproduced. I read Andre Malraux’s “The Museum Without Walls,” which was basically about the effect of photography on our perception and understanding of art, and the notion that analysis had superseded admiration in one’s experience of art as a result of photography. I think that idea was common currency in Conceptual art circles at that time.”

After graduating, he spent a year in the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York, then attended California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, where he was Conceptualist John Baldessari’s teaching assistant, graduating with a master’s in fine art in 1979. Returning to New York, he soon showed his photographed constructions at the Sonnabend Gallery. (He now shows with Sean Kelly Gallery.)

His first projects were photographed models of 1950s suburbia, then Arts and Crafts bungalows, followed by 1880s shingle-style homes. “That interested me because it signified values commonly shared by Americans.”

With each period, he analyzed the conditions that produced the architectural styles, deconstructing the American myths attached to archetypal structures.

In 1984, he returned to CalArts to teach, and his trips driving back and forth across the country led to a series of frontier pictures of model ranch buildings, covered wagons, split-rail fences and rugged terrain.

“The conquest of the West also signifies a moment when the American identity became fixed,” he says. “The notion of the rugged individual from the pioneer to the cowboy and the myth of the West became a source of American identity.”

Much of this work was black-and-white and self-consciously artificial, more like stage sets than special effects, and eventually presented as transparencies on large light-boxes.

“I was following the historical chain back in time,” he says. “I started work on architectural facades that were supposed to represent different typologies of ecclesiastical and civic architecture.”

During the ‘80s, Casebere made regular visits to Europe, which led him to study the 18th century architecture of the Enlightenment and provided him with his entwined themes of the 1990s, the reform movement in prisons and the origins of education in the monasteries. In both, the stark serenity of his images contains questions about notions of authority and control.

Given his childhood associations with education and schools, the flooded classrooms of the Phillips Academy would seem to symbolize the subconscious and psychological as much as the philosophical or historical. A few years earlier, he had made pictures of classrooms with the desks and chairs upended in chaos. Although he admits dreaming about empty rooms flooded with water, Casebere pauses rather than admit to the suggestion of the subconscious at work. “Since my father was always scheming about how to do away with classes and planning, destructuring strategies, it’s funny I’d be making this art about the repressiveness of schools.

“I think that maybe I was specifically doing something that relates to the uncanny, taking a comfortable place and looking at its flip side or creating unsettling emotions by depicting its demise. Ultimately, they look more like dream images. They aren’t quite real.” *
