A Santa Ana woman was in critical condition late Tuesday after she was stabbed repeatedly by her husband, authorities said.

Police found her husband, Guillermo Contreras, 57, covered in blood and holding a 2-year-old boy when they responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 300 block of East Central Avenue shortly after noon, said Police Sgt. Raul Luna.

Inside the house, investigators found his 25-year-old wife, who was not identified, with multiple stab wounds to her head. A butcher’s knife was stuck in her throat, Luna said.

The woman was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where she was reported to be in critical but stable condition.

Cardenas was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and taken to the Santa Ana jail, Luna said.
