Healthy Whitaker Making Title Defense on June 11

Heavyweight Lance Whitaker of Granada Hills will fight for the first time in 10 months when he makes his first defense of his WBC Continental Americas title against Alex Garcia of Hollywood on June 11 at the Lucky Star Casino in Las Vegas.

Whitaker, 19-1 with 16 knockouts, has been idle since defeating Monte Barrett for the title in August.

Whitaker, 6 feet 8 and 250 pounds, suffered a knee injury in the bout and has undergone lengthy rehabilitation.

Garcia is 40-5-1 with 29 knockouts.

The fight will be televised live nationally on Fox Sports Net.

VOLLEYBALL

The teams play in a semifinal of the Southern Section Division III boys’ playoffs tonight at 7 at Glendale College.

The Crusaders (24-0), seeded No. 3, are making their first trip to the semifinals since 1995. The Eagles (18-3), seeded No. 2, are making their first.

Chaminade relies on outside hitter Adam Hickerson and setter Paul Jocas, who has committed to UCLA.

Village Christian is led by outside hitter Ken Benesh and middle blocker Josh Seffel.

BASEBALL

* Joe Borchard of Stanford and Bill Scott of UCLA were chosen to the All-Pacific 10 Conference team for the second consecutive year.

Borchard, from Camarillo High, and Scott, from Alemany, are junior outfielders expected to go high in the amateur draft in two weeks.

GOLF

* Hana Kim of Encino shot four-under-par 68, lowest round of the tournament, in the final round and tied for third place in the Scott Robertson Memorial on Sunday at Roanoke, Va.

Kim, who totaled 75-77-68--220, finished behind Aree Song Wongluekiet of Bradenton, Fla., who won at 72-70-74--216, and her twin, Naree Song Wongluekiet, who shot 73-76-70--219.

Ina Kim, Hana’s sister, tied for 10th at 74-75-82--231.

BASKETBALL

* Sha’Tasha Allen, a 5-9 guard at Canyons, has signed with Cal State Northridge, joining Cougar teammate Kameelah Purdom, who committed to the Matadors on May 15.

Allen is the fourth recruit to sign this year, Coach Frozena Jerro of Northridge said.

Allen, from Banning, was selected most valuable player of the Western State Conference Southern Division and was a two-year starter for Canyons.

Purdom is a two-time All-WSC forward.

Also signing with Northridge were forward-center Jennifer Shetters of Wilson High in Portland, Ore., and forward-center Chrystal McCarthy of Oak Ridge High in El Dorado Hills, Calif.
