FRESHWATER
Los Angeles County
CASTAIC LAKE--Both lakes are producing bass and trout. Try crawdads on the lower lake and water dogs on the upper lake for bass, and rainbow Power Bait for trout. Top catch was a 14-pound striped bass caught on a swim-bait.
PYRAMID LAKE--A little bit of everything but not a lot of anything. Largemouth bass, catfish and striped bass are showing on the hooks.
Orange County
IRVINE LAKE--Top bass was a fish just under 14 pounds, caught by a trout angler using Power Bait. Trout and bass fishing is fair.
LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish action is best and mostly two-pounders are biting on mackerel and shrimp. Some bass and trout.
OSO RESERVOIR--Bass action remains good for fish weighing 2-4 pounds and plastics, spinnerbaits and crankbaits are all working. Some catfish.
SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Catfish season is underway and fish averaging two pounds are biting on mackerel and marshmallow-mealworm combos.
Ventura County
LAKE CASITAS--Top bass was a 13-8 by Larry Elshere, Ojai, on a swim-bait. Several quality bass were weighed in and most were caught on shad. Top trout, 2-12 by Kathy Gray, Oak View, on shad. Top catfish, 23 pounds by Teri Parrish, Huntington Beach, on a waterdog.
LAKE PIRU--Trout fishermen are doing best, but fishing is tough as you have to go deep and spend a lot of time between bites.
Santa Barbara County
LAKE CACHUMA--Trout are going deep but a lot are being caught by trollers at 30 feet. Night crawler-flasher combos are working best. Bass are biting mostly on spinnerbaits and plastic worms, averaging 2-3 pounds. Some red-ear perch.
San Bernardino County
BIG BEAR LAKE--Lots of big trout weighed in, most caught by trollers using Rapalas or bait fishermen using night crawlers.
GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Trout fishing is fair to good and a 7-1 was caught on a white mini-jig tipped with salmon eggs.
JESS RANCH LAKES--Trout, catfish and bluegill are providing a nice bonus for picnickers. But you have to get here early to catch the fish.
Riverside County
CORONA LAKE--Catfish season opened Thursday and night fishing should be good throughout the summer. Trout are still being caught sporadically.
LAKE PERRIS--Bass, trout and bluegill are all finding their way onto hooks. Top bass was a 9-2 by Tim Carter, Redlands, on a crawdad. An 8 1/2 pounder was also caught.
LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass action is great, with mostly chicken livers attracting fish averaging four pounds. Largemouth bass action is fair and the catfish bite is so-so.
San Diego County
LAKE CUYAMACA--An abundance of natural food is making it difficult to fool the trout, but that is what’s happening and anglers are getting a few per day using mostly night crawlers. Catfish action is getting better.
DIXON LAKE--Bass fishing is slow to fair, catfish action is better and bluegill are starting to show at the cattails.
SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--The bass lakes are fair and a 9-12 was caught on a waterdog at San Vicente. Lower Otay is yielding excellent catches of bluegill.
EASTERN SIERRA
Crowley Lake remains the most popular producer and even the perch are starting to bite. Hard to go wrong anywhere in this region, but the Owens River, especially the Lower Owens, is running fast (400 cubic feet per second), making things a bit tough.
South Lake above Bishop is low and boats probably won’t be allowed on the water for the holiday weekend. Sabrina is also very low. Mammoth’s upper lakes basin will receive its first Alpers-trout plant today. They’ll go into Twin, Mamie, George and Mary.
Gull Lake on the June Loop produced the most big fish, with an 8-pounder on a red-and-gold Thomas Buoyant topping the list. Bridgeport Reservoir is producing some browns at the dam. The East Walker River outside Bridgeport is an excellent choice for fly fishermen using nymphs (pheasant-tail and prince). Little Virginia is ice free and producing nicely. Big Virginia remains frozen.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--14 anglers (2 boats): 40 red rock cod, 10 rock cod, 20 rockfish, 7 salmon.
AVILA BEACH (Patriot Sportfishing)--13 anglers (1 boat): 14 rock cod, 21 rockfish, 8 red rock cod, 2 bolina, 1 ling cod.
SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--38 anglers (2 boats): 54 calico bass, 1 sand bass, 2 ocean white fish, 1 ling cod, 83 rockfish, 2 sheephead.
OXNARD (Cisco’s)--96 anglers (6 boats): 11 yellowtail, 46 white sea bass, 34 white fish, 1 sheephead, 3 sculpin, 49 rockfish, 40 red snapper, 4 halibut, 22 calico bass, 2 barracuda.
PORT HUENEME--56 anglers (3 boats): 30 white sea bass, 2 yellowtail, 1 calico bass, 26 rock fish, 1 sand bass.
MARINA DEL REY--37 anglers (4 boats): 7 halibut, 175 sand bass, 21 sculpin, 4 calico bass.
REDONDO BEACH--71 anglers (3 boats): 79 sand bass, 54 calico bass, 4 halibut, 8 sculpin, 2 sheephead, 2 rockfish, 20 barracuda.
SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--55 anglers (3 boats): 4 yellowtail, 339 calico bass, 52 barracuda, 4 blue perch, 2 sheephead, 1 halibut. (22nd St. Landing)--87 anglers (5 boats): 2 yellowtail, 1 white sea bass, 255 calico bass, 52 sand bass, 114 barracuda, 22 sculpin, 25 sheephead, 63 white fish.
