The old caboose on Imperial Highway is out of commission, but it won’t be carted off to the junkyard.

City officials are scouting for possible spots to relocate the caboose, stationed for years on the side of the road near Eureka Avenue. A row of century-old mail carts a block away will also be moved before the widening of that segment of Imperial Highway in July, said Parks and Recreation Director Steve Rudometkin.

He said the cars probably will have to be moved twice--once to make way for road construction, and again to be brought back to the Main Street area--because the caboose may be used in plans to spruce up Old Towne.

City staff members estimate the cost of moving the caboose twice at $15,000. Additional expenses would include $10,000 for landscaping and walkways in the area where the caboose would be placed, and another $5,000 to refurbish the 80-year-old caboose.
