LOCAL NOTES

* Laguna Beach has hired former USC standout Clayton Olivier as interim boys’ basketball coach, Principal Stu Sims announced.

Olivier replaces Bret Fleming, who resigned last week after 10 seasons.

Olivier, a fifth-round pick of the San Antonio Spurs in the 1985 NBA draft, served as an assistant coach for the Artists last season. He played in Europe and the CBA, and was formerly a head coach at Los Amigos.

“I’m really excited,” Olivier said. “There’s still a [touch] of sadness about Bret Fleming, but we’re getting through it. The kids are looking forward to a change, and we’re working hard at it.”

Olivier, 39, must re-apply for the position once it is re-opened in the spring, Sims said.

* Mike Ford has been rehired as the interim girls’ basketball coach at Los Alamitos.

Ford, a math teacher on campus, coached the varsity for nine seasons and posted a 78-140 record, resigned after the 1998-99 season. His replacement, Kevin Davis, was dismissed after one season following criminal allegations, and his replacement, Mike Liskey, resigned Sept. 29 without coaching a game.

“There’s a possibility of [Ford] continuing as head coach,” said girls’ athletic director Donna Bohannon. “We’re going to re-open the position at the end of the year and go from there.”

In Davis’ one season, Los Alamitos was 9-17, 1-9 in the Sunset League.

FOOTBALL

Esperanza quarterback Greg Farrell will miss the rest of the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, according to Coach Gary Meek.

Farrell was injured in the Aztecs’ 30-11 Sunset League victory Friday over Huntington Beach. Ryan Sausedo will start in his place.

“It makes it tough, but we’ve got a really good backup [Ryan Sausedo],” Meek said. “He started four games for us last year and won three of those games.” Esperanza, ranked No. 3 in Orange County, plays fourth-ranked Los Alamitos on Friday at Valencia High.

* Tony Hartley, a graduate of Los Alamitos High and the all-time leader in receiving yardage at Oregon, was selected last weekend by the Los Angeles Xtreme with the 385th overall pick in the first draft of the XFL.

A wide receiver, Hartley had 2,744 career receiving yards at Oregon, where he finished two shy of the school records for career receptions and touchdown catches. He had 160 catches and 22 touchdowns.

* Villa Park High has holes to fill in its defensive line after losing two starters for the season.

Senior Jason Phillips fractured his lower right leg last week and junior Salvador Solorzano broke a leg two weeks ago.

Coach Pat Mahoney said senior defensive end Scott Koenig and senior lineman Jeremy Colacchio, both of whom were hampered by sprained ankles, should return this week against Santa Ana Valley.

TENNIS

Servite graduate Ryan Moore and partner Nick Rainey of USC will face former Woodbridge High standout Chase Exon and Stefan Suter of Pepperdine in the men’s doubles final in the 44th SoCal Intercollegiate Championships at 1 p.m. today at the Los Angeles Tennis Club in Hollywood.
