Two women and a boy died in a fire in East Los Angeles Thursday, and a second burned child was hospitalized in critical condition, a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson said.

The fire at 931 S. Bonnie Beach Place was reported at 6:07 p.m., a dispatcher said.

The names and ages of the victims were not available. Nor was the cause of the fire.

“There were bars on the windows, which did not have emergency release mechanisms on them,” said Inspector Michael Brown.

“So firefighters had to chop their way into the house.” The fire damaged two adjoining units in the back of the burned structure, said Jerome Thierry of the American Red Cross.

Red Cross volunteers will be providing shelter and food and crisis counseling for two families, he said.

About 10 people in three units were displaced, he said.
