2 Held After Firing at Off-Duty Officer, Police Say
Two men, who Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials say fired shots at an off-duty police officer, were arrested Friday after a botched burglary, officials said.
The men were identified as Anthony Dunn, 20, and Terrance Lashawn Smith, 20. They were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. Each was being held at the Lakewood sheriff’s station on $100,000 bail.
The off-duty Los Angeles police officer, whose identity was not disclosed, wasn’t injured, said sheriff’s Deputy Jim Tatreau.
At 9:15 a.m., the officer spotted the men in the 4500 block of Ostrom Avenue, Tatreau said.
“He saw them inside the residence garage. He turned to confront them and one of the suspects fired on him twice,” Tatreau said.
Dunn was arrested first, Tatreau said, and Smith hours later after he was chased down by officers. At one point, officers believed Smith was hiding in the attic of a nearby home but a search team failed to find him. He was discovered later.
