Green Means Go in Brethren Christian’s Victory

Brethren Christian running back Leon Green rushed for 122 yards in 15 carries, scored a touchdown and also had an interception as the Warriors defeated visiting Whittier Christian, 20-13, Saturday at Clark Field in Lakewood.

Green picked up the majority of his yardage on his 87-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter to put Brethren Christian up, 14-0.

Brethren Christian (2-6-1, 1-3) scored its first touchdown after a turnover--Chris Seals’ fumble recovery at the Whittier Christian 16-yard line. Two plays later, James Dingman hauled in a 16-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Painter.

Whittier Christian (3-6, 1-3) used almost four minutes to begin the second quarter, driving to the Brethren Christian three. But on fourth and goal, Paul Aitchison stopped Herald running back David Jones.

Four plays later, Green scored his touchdown. After Whittier Christian went three and out, the Warriors used a 10-play, 51-yard scoring drive, capped by Painter’s one-yard sneak with 35 seconds left in the first half.

Brethren Christian, which ended a four-game losing streak, outgained Whittier Christian, 191-84, in the first half. But in the second half, its defense took over, intercepting passes by Whittier Christian quarterback Abe Santos three times.
