L.A. County Breaks Ground on Courthouse in Lancaster
Los Angeles County has broken ground on a $110-million courthouse project in Lancaster that will be developed by Century City-based MBK Southern California Ltd.
The 370,000-square-foot courthouse will have 15 courtrooms and the capacity to add six more. MBK will manage an $80-million contract for construction of the courthouse and 1,100 parking spaces. The county will put the remaining $30 million into off-site improvements, said Andy Trachman, president of MBK Southern California.
The building will house municipal and superior courts as well as offices for the district attorney, public defender, alternate public defender, Probation Department and Sheriff’s Department. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2003.
The architect is Pasadena-based Mosakowski, Lindsay & Associates. Haskell Constructors Ltd. of Irvine is the contractor.
The building is the third courthouse construction project since passage of a 1996 law designed to ease crowding and improve judicial efficiency. The others include a courthouse under construction in Chatsworth and one that opened early this year near Los Angeles International Airport.
