A 49-year-old Panorama City woman was killed and a 2-year-old boy was critically injured in separate traffic accidents Monday, the Los Angeles Police Department said Tuesday.

Peggie Gutierrez died in a 5 p.m. two-car collision, said Det. Dwight Gillette of the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division. Gutierrez was driving west on Strathern Street at Woodman Avenue when her Geo Prizm was struck by a Nissan Maxima going north.

Gutierrez, who was traveling alone, was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where she was pronounced dead about 6:20 p.m., Gillette said.

Gillette said the accident is under investigation, but that Gutierrez possibly failed to stop for a red light at the intersection.

The driver of the Nissan suffered minor injuries, he said.

About 4 p.m. Monday, a 2-year-old boy was hit by car after he dashed into the street at Sherman Way and Ranchito Avenue, said Gillette.

Gillette said the boy was critically injured, but officials at the hospital where he was taken had no immediate information about his condition.
