Officials at Mission College will open a new campus student health center today.

The center, housed in a trailer next to the campus police office, has two exam rooms, a waiting room and a counseling room.

The Northeast Valley Health Corporation will operate the center and provide the medical staff.

“It’s important because students used to have to go off campus, to our San Fernando Health Center, for medical attention,” said Abel Sedillo, a spokesman for the corporation. “That’s about 2 1/2 miles, which is not an easy task if you don’t have transportation and you’re sick. Many students just didn’t go.”

Also, students who went to the San Fernando Health Center often had long waits before getting care because the clinic is open to the public, Sedillo said.

The new campus center will be open exclusively to Mission College students, who can either walk in or schedule appointments.

Today’s ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and include a performance by jazz singer Suzan Soloman and keyboardist Raul Springs and remarks by Assemblyman Tony Cardenas (D-Sylmar) and Mission President Adriana Barrera.

Students wishing to make an appointment at the new clinic may call (818) 362-6182.
