Sparked by a second-half goal from Jessica Edwards while playing one person down, the USC women’s soccer team advanced in the NCAA playoffs with a 2-1 victory over San Diego in a first-round match Wednesday at the Coliseum.
The Trojans (14-5-2) will next play UCLA Saturday at Drake Stadium.
Edwards’ goal in the 49th minute proved to be the game winner. It was the freshman’s team-leading 11th goal and it came in front of the net as she put in a pass from Brittany Savelkoul, giving the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
USC played the final 58 minutes with only 10 players. Senior midfielder Katie Ticehurst drew a red card in the 32nd minute after she hit a Torero player in the face.
