Burbank police were still searching Saturday for a burgundy Chevrolet Suburban that struck and killed an 81-year-old pedestrian as he was crossing South Main Street on Friday afternoon.

The victim was identified by authorities Saturday as Burbank resident Robert Sandmeyer.

Sandmeyer was crossing the street near Spazier Avenue about 5 p.m. to visit his wife at a convalescent home when the sports utility vehicle struck him and continued southbound without slowing down, police said.

Sandmeyer was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.

The vehicle, which was traveling about 30 mph, was last seen turning west onto Riverside Drive, police said.
