Beamer Says Alabama Contacted Him

Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer says he has been contacted by Alabama representatives about the Crimson Tide job.

But Beamer, who spoke to the Birmingham Touchdown Club on Monday night, gave no indication he might leave for the post being vacated by Mike DuBose after Alabama plays Auburn on Saturday.

Notre Dame Coach Bob Davie, whose job was shaky after the Irish posted their first losing record in 13 years last season, said he and Athletic Director Kevin White have had preliminary talks about his future.

“During the open-date week we visited and we decided, ‘Look, there are just too many things more important now, let’s have this conversation after the season,’ ” Davie said. “I feel great about that, and I think Kevin does as well.”

The two-headed monster is back at Florida. Just when Jesse Palmer seemed like the sure starting quarterback for Saturday’s game between the fourth-ranked Gators and third-ranked Florida State, Gator Coach Steve Spurrier decided to go another direction. Both Palmer and redshirt freshman Rex Grossman will play, and Spurrier hasn’t yet decided who will start, or how much each will play. . . . Larry Welsh won’t return as football coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo after a third consecutive losing season. The Mustangs are 19-24 under Welsh, 3-7 this season. . . . No. 16 Clemson, which plays No. 25 South Carolina on Saturday at Clemson, S.C., accepted a bid to play in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1.
