UCLA/USC THE RIVALRY

Share

UCLA Coach Bob Toledo won’t rely on coordinators to speak for him this year.

Last year he sent his defensive and offensive coordinators to the annual UCLA bonfire and rally during the school’s “Beat ‘SC Week.”

But today Toledo will attempt to pump up an expected crowd of about 1,500 at the intramural field near Pauley Pavilion at 9:30 a.m. along with his players, the Bruin band and cheerleaders.

Most of the $30,000 worth of UCLA band instruments and uniforms stolen on the USC campus Sunday when the two bands played their annual Blood Bowl game will be returned today by the USC campus police.

However, about $5,000 worth is still missing.

UPDATE YOUR WARDROBE

If you think USC Coach Paul Hackett isn’t wanted, you’re wrong.

But Hackett will have to drive to Westwood to pick up a popular “Keep Paul Hackett’ T-shirt.

If USC loses Saturday he can remember the season by buying a “1-7” T-shirt (USC’s record in the Pacific 10 Conference if it loses to UCLA).

Students are also selling a Trojan Family Values shirt with USC Athletic Director Mike Garrett throwing a fireball at former Trojan coach John Robinson.

But the rumor that students at USC are selling shirts with university President Steven Sample throwing a fireball at Garrett are false. It was probably university donors pushing the shirts.

The rivalry:

“We are so fortunate to have two national football powerhouses in our city [because] even in a year like this where neither team has lived up to their own expectations the rivalry is bigger than the game itself.”

The rivalry:

“There are NFL rivalries but the atmosphere is not quite like this. The only thing I can compare it to is an NFL playoff game. . . . My son is a student [at UCLA] now and going to USC [was not an option]. . . . I’ll be at the game Saturday sitting with the chancellor. . . . The game is one of the great traditions in college sports and it’s done with great spirit and great intensity.

“It doesn’t matter if [the schools] aren’t going to the Rose Bowl. It’s still a great a game.”

NOW YOU KNOW

Chancellor Albert Carnesale came to UCLA in 1997 from Harvard, where he was provost.

Sample came to USC in 1991 from State University of New York at Buffalo, where he had been president since 1982.

The Trojans, who ended an eight-game losing streak against the Bruins last year, will have another streak to break Saturday:

The Bruins have won four in a row over the Trojans at the Rose Bowl.

USC’s last victory over the Bruins in Pasadena was in 1990, when Todd Marinovich led USC to a 45-42 triumph in one of the series’ all-time great games.

The Bruins won their only national championship in 1954. They defeated USC, 34-0, before a crowd of 102,548 at the Coliseum and finished with a 9-0 record.
