City Council Weighs Sharp Cut in Number of Billboards
The City Council is studying the possibility of sharply reducing the number of billboards allowed in the city.
Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas has introduced a motion calling for city lawmakers to consider a new sign ordinance reducing the number of existing signs and prohibiting construction of new billboards.
“There are too many billboards in the city--more than 7,000,” Ridley-Thomas said. “We want to get the number reduced and substantially.”
The councilman’s motion--which was seconded by Councilman Hal Bernson and passed Tuesday--calls for the city’s planning and building departments to submit a plan in the coming weeks to the council for “fast-track” consideration.
