Jamming Joints: One of my favorite places is Catalina Bar & Grill, the last great jazz place in L.A. I’ll also go to the Bel Age Hotel bar when they have jazz there. I spent a lot of time in Spaceland, which is where I used to live, in Silver Lake. It’s sort of an alternative rock joint. Sometimes I’d go and just see whoever is playing, but I saw Elliott Smith there, and my band, Personal Power, has played there.

Turning Japanese: Itacho on Beverly Boulevard is probably my favorite restaurant in the world. Part of me is reluctant to mention it because it is so crowded already. Another place that not as many people know about is Shibucho, on Beverly east of Silver Lake Boulevard. It’s insane. For all the hype about Matsuhisa, it doesn’t compare to food at this place. It’s open late, so it’s never really crowded because people come in at all times. It’s sushi, but he’s a French and Italian wine connoisseur, so he has incredible wines. And sometime he’ll have cheese and pa^te. And the quality of the fish is uncompromising.

$and: Ideally, I’d go to the beach, whether to a friend’s house on the beach to play Wiffle ball or something or up to El Matador, which is past Zuma. El Matador is a great spot, really beautiful. It’s a state park, with high cliffs. You walk way down these paths to get down there, and it’s not ever too crowded.

No Name Dropping: As part of an old apartment building on Wilshire Boulevard [in Koreatown], there’s this bar that I’m obsessed with. There are 20-year-olds living in the building and people who have lived there 50 years. It reminds me of “The Shining.” There’s a sign-in sheet on display for a party from the 1920s. It’s still very much that old place, but it’s also a hip, trendy bar.
