Team Giving Blue Jay Shortstop Gonzalez a Look

Share

The Angels have contacted the agent for Alex Gonzalez and have expressed interest in the free-agent shortstop, who played the last six seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays.

But they “have not made any significant proposal” according to Gonzalez’s agent, Jim Bronner.

Gonzalez is believed to be seeking a contract worth between $5 million and $6 million per season. He missed all but 38 games of the 1999 season because of a shoulder injury. He bounced back strong last season, hitting .252 in 141 games. He had 15 home runs and drove in 69 runs.

The Blue Jays are attempting to resign Gonzalez, who decided to test the free agent market. He is considered the second-best shortstop available, after the Mariners’ Alex Rodriguez.

The Angels will conclude their spring training schedule with the Freeway Series . . . the Interstate 10 Freeway Series, that is, playing three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Angels will play the Diamondbacks in Phoenix on March 30 and 31 and at Edison Field on April 1. Last season, the Angels ended a two-decade tradition of playing the Dodgers at the end of spring training.
