2 Motorists Critical After Collision

Two people are in critical condition after a collision early Wednesday, Los Angeles police said.

A Sherman Oaks woman, 77, was driving west in the 17400 block of Nordhoff Street about 6:25 a.m. when her car drifted into an eastbound lane and collided with a pickup truck, said Officer Keith Ortiz of the LAPD Valley Traffic Division.

The woman said she may have passed out or fallen asleep at the wheel, Ortiz said. Drugs or alcohol were not factors in the wreck, police said.

Both drivers, whose names were withheld by police, were taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where they were listed in critical condition.

The man who was driving the pickup, 43, suffered major chest and torso injuries, authorities said. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The woman was wearing a seat belt. Details about her injuries were not released. No charges have been filed, and an investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
