Pepperdine Sinks Irvine on Penalty Shot

Greg Lonzo converted a four-meter penalty shot with 1:25 left to give Pepperdine a 7-6 victory over UC Irvine, the No. 3 team in the nation, Saturday at UC Irvine.

Chris Tilden gave the Waves a 5-2 third-quarter lead, but Irvine scored three unanswered goals. After Michael Hausmann scored for Pepperdine (5-1), ranked eighth nationally, Irvine answered with a goal by Garrett Gentry in a man-up situation with just more than three minutes left.

Lonzo and Hausmann each finished with two goals.

Dan Klatt had two goals for Irvine.

Cypress 8, Valley 3--Chris Langer scored two goals, but the Monarchs lost the third-place game in the Cypress tournament.

David Krauss also scored for Valley (4-8).

Valley, which got eight saves by goalie John Hembree, failed to score in four man-advantage situations.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Villa Park 6, Royal 5--Tyler Templeton and Ramiro Saldain each scored two goals for Royal in the championship game of the Villa Park tournament.

Villa Park (11-2) is ranked No. 5 among Division I teams; Royal (14-2) is No. 1 in Division IV.

In the semifinals, Chris Andelin scored three goals in Royal’s 7-4 victory over Santa Barbara.

Tom Onyshko had 25 saves on the day for Royal.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Channel Islands Invitational--Santa Clara bounced back from a two-point loss to Nordhoff in a Frontier League meet on Thursday with a 63-64 victory over Newbury Park at College Park.

Camarillo, running without injured junior Brandon Lucero, was third with 102 points, followed by Rio Mesa with 137 and Hueneme with 148.

Sophomore Phillip Reid of Rio Mesa, defending Pacific View League champion, placed first with a 15:29 clocking over the three-mile course and sophomore Johnny Zendejas of Camarillo was second in 15:39. Seniors Bobby Hull and Michael Reed of Santa Clara were third and fourth in 15:41 and 15:50.

Senior Joe LaSecla of Newbury Park finished fifth in 15:54, with junior teammate Randy Smith a second behind.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Channel Islands Invitational--Jennifer Turk’s second-place finish paced Newbury Park to a 102-130 victory over Righetti at College Park.

Arroyo Grande, led by individual winner Meagen Snell, was third with 137 points, followed by Rio Mesa with 165 and Camarillo with 166.

Turk, a senior, clocked 18:40 over the three-mile course to finish 16 seconds behind Snell.

Senior Kathy Jones of Santa Clara was fifth in 19:10.

Brea Olinda Invitational--Junior Cassie Ramirez of Highland set a course record of 19:33 to win the three-mile race at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.

Ramirez, defending Golden League champion, broke the course record of 19:58 to help Highland finish third behind Brea-Olinda and Rosary in the overall team standings.
