Goal Drought Costs Titans Poll Position
The Cal State Fullerton men’s soccer team, ranked in the top 10 in the College Soccer Coaches Assn. poll earlier this season, has lost its last four games and scored only one goal in each game.
A 5-1 loss at Clemson Sunday was the worst defeat for the Titans since a 4-0 loss to Tulsa in 1998.
Fullerton (6-4) scored 21 goals in winning its first six games, but the Titans have struggled on offense the last two weeks against strong teams. Fullerton lost to Furman, 2-1, Friday in the Clemson tournament after losses to Portland and Washington the week before at Washington.
“We’re playing a very tough schedule, and we knew that going in,” Titan Coach Al Mistri said. “Against Clemson Sunday, we created numerous chances to score but just didn’t do it.”
Furman is ranked 14th in this week’s poll and Clemson is 20th. Fullerton dropped out of the top 25 last week.
The Titans begin Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play this weekend with games at San Diego State Friday and at UC Irvine (6-3) Sunday.
