The condition of Troy Kopp, the former Mission Viejo High School quarterback who suffered serious injuries in a car accident in Canada last week, has been upgraded to fair and stable.

Kopp was admitted to Calgary Foothills Hospital in critical condition. His family has requested no information regarding his injuries be released.

According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigators, the accident occurred about 170 miles west of Calgary when Kopp, who was alone in his vehicle, attempted to pass a truck on a gravel shoulder. He lost control of his car, crossed the center line and was struck by an oncoming truck and then was hit by the truck he was trying to pass.

Neither of the other drivers was injured. Officials are still investigating the accident.

Kopp, 29, graduated from Mission Viejo in 1989. He attended University of the Pacific, where he set school and NCAA passing records. He bounced around the Arena Football League, playing for several teams. He was signed by the San Diego Chargers in 1998 but was cut during training camp.

Kopp opened the season with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League but was released recently.

BASKETBALL

Mike Liskey has resigned as girls’ basketball coach at Los Alamitos, Athletic Director Donna Bohannon said. She is seeking an interim coach to replace Liskey.

Liskey, a math teacher, was hired in May in the wake of criminal allegations against former coach Kevin Davis. Liskey, who resigned Friday, did not coach a game. He was a boys’ junior varsity coach and varsity assistant last season at Valencia.

Los Alamitos was 9-17 last season, 1-9 in the Sunset League.

SOCCER

The Soccer for Hope Charity Walk and children’s soccer camp in Mission Viejo, established by former Splash player Oliver Wyss, raised $38,000 for the City of Hope National Cancer Center in Duarte. The total exceeded the $35,000 goal Wyss, whose life was saved at City of Hope when he suffered a rare blood disorder in 1997, had hoped to raise.

ADMINISTRATION

The California Interscholastic Federation will hold two meetings in Orange County this week as part of a statewide review of its operation.

The first meeting is scheduled from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Huntington Beach Unified High School District board room. The second is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Saddleback Valley Unified School District office in Mission Viejo.

The meetings are open to the public.

Among issues to be discussed: whether there should be a minimum or maximum number of schools in a section, and whether all sections should adopt the same set of rules. Currently, each section governs itself. For instance, the San Diego Section sanctions roller hockey, while the Southern Section does not.
