Portable signs will be banned from the downtown area under a new sign code approved by the City Council this week. The council also made changes to the rules governing the number of window signs merchants can display and signs that advertise second-floor businesses.

Under the new code, stores with 75 feet of street frontage or less will be limited to one window sign. Stores with more street frontage will be allowed two signs.

The new code also allows for ground-floor directory signs and second-floor signs advertising upstairs businesses.
