A 19-year-old driver was killed and two of his passengers were injured Friday when a pickup truck flipped over and struck a utility pole in Santa Clarita, authorities said.

Michael Carlson of Valencia was pronounced dead at the accident scene. Two of his friends, both 19, suffered moderate injuries and were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital where they are listed in good condition.

The accident occurred about 1:10 p.m. as Carlson was driving southbound in the 30100 block of Bouquet Canyon Road. He was approaching Texas Canyon Road when he lost control of his 1999 Toyota truck, which went down an embankment, California Highway Patrol Officer Richard Perez said.

The truck struck a telephone pole and flipped over, he added. No other vehicles were involved.

The cause of the accident is under investigation but speed may have been a factor in the crash, authorities said.
