UC Irvine Holds Off Cal in Water Polo

Fifth-ranked UC Irvine staved off a fourth-quarter rally by second-ranked California to win a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo game, 5-4, Saturday at Cal.

Senior Dan Klatt scored with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give Irvine (7-3, 2-1 in conference) a 5-1 lead. But Cal (6-4, 2-1) rallied and drew to within one with 37 seconds to play.

Goalie Dan Hipp made nine saves and Jeff Powers and John Dorfi each had two goals for Irvine.

In nonconference college football:

Redlands 41, Chapman 17--Quarterback Clay Groefsema completed 19 of 27 passes for 366 yards and five touchdowns for host Redlands (3-1).

Phil Cruz rushed for 117 yards in 13 carries and scored a touchdown and Bobby Calderon had nine receptions for 110 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Todd McLean.

McLean completed seven of nine passes for 109 yards and a touchdown for Chapman (1-4).

Chapman’s Matt Deter kicked a 43-yard field goal with 11:19 remaining in the second quarter, but Redlands came back to score on a 72-yard touchdown pass from Groefsema to Josh Hinchey to take the lead for good.

Chapman has been outscored by 56 points in its last two games and by 191 points this season.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Vanguard 5, Hope International 2--Host Vanguard (6-3-1, 3-0-1) got goals from five players, including a first-half goal by former Estancia player Esaul Mendoza.

Kim Britton scored both goals for Hope International (2-7, 0-4).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer:

Vanguard 1, Hope International 0--Amber Waddle scored off an assist from Alexis Newbold with one minute left in the first half to lift the host Lions (7-2, 2-2). Goalkeeper Robin Landauer made three saves in her second shutout of the season.

Erin Carey had eight saves for Hope International (4-6, 0-4).

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Irvine 1--Megan Sabo had a match-high 26 kills and Kim Levey had 49 assists for the visiting Titans, who won, 15-6, 13-15, 15-12, 15-13. Leilani Williamsen had 25 kills and Jamie Ivers had 18 kills and two aces for Fullerton (5-11, 1-4).

Chanda McLeod led the Anteaters (6-7, 1-4) with 23 kills, Larissa Carter had 19 and Brooke Witt had 11.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Azusa Pacific 3, Vanguard 0--Jenna Sagehorn had 11 kills and three aces for visiting Azusa Pacific (16-4, 6-3), which won, 15-5, 15-9, 15-6. Carly Birkhauser had nine kills for Vanguard (1-12, 1-8).

Fresno Pacific 3, Concordia 0--Carrie Merritt had 13 kills and 39 assists for visiting Concordia (14-8, 3-6), which lost, 15-7, 15-10, 15-11. Becky Stiglich had a match-high 17 kills and eight digs for Fresno Pacific (13-8, 8-1).
