1. FLORIDA STATE (5-1) lost to No. 7 Miami, 27-24. Seminoles became first No. 1 team to lose in regular season since Ohio State lost to Michigan State, 28-24, on Nov. 7, 1998. Next: Duke, Saturday

2. NEBRASKA (5-0) defeated Iowa State, 49-27. Pass defense has to be a concern to Cornhuskers, especially with a Nov. 28 game at Oklahoma now looming large. Next: at Texas Tech, Saturday

3. VIRGINIA TECH (5-0) defeated Temple, 35-13. Michael Vick turns in another so-so performance, but the Hokies’ continue to feast on the lowly Big East. Next: West Virginia, Thursday

4. KANSAS STATE (6-0) defeated Kansas, 52-13. Except for their schedule, the Wildcats have nothing to be ashamed of. That will begin to change this week. Next: No. 10 Oklahoma, Saturday

5. CLEMSON (6-0) defeated North Carolina State, 34-27. Tigers weren’t expected to be challenged until a Nov. 4 game at Florida State, but they struggled against Wolfpack. Next: Maryland, Saturday

6. MICHIGAN (4-2) lost to Purdue, 32-31. Maybe life is fair. Wolverines should have lost two weeks ago against Illinois, but they should have defeated the Boilermakers. Next: Indiana, Saturday

7. MIAMI (4-1) defeated No. 1 Florida State, 27-24. Temple could prove troublesome, but the next big game on Hurricane schedule is Nov. 4 against Virginia Tech. Next: at Temple, Oct. 21

8. OHIO STATE (5-0) defeated No. 24 Wisconsin, 23-7. Buckeyes impersonated Terrell Owens’ afterward, as about 20 players danced on the Badgers’ ‘W’ at midfield. Next: Minnesota, Saturday

9. OREGON (4-1) did not play. Ducks have played four games at home--all victories--and one on the road--a loss. They are packing their bags this week for trip to L.A. Next: at No. 18 USC, Saturday

10. OKLAHOMA (5-0) defeated No. 11 Texas, 63-14. Sooner Coach Bob Stoops’ hiring of his brother, Mike, from Kansas State two years certainly to get play this week. Next: at No. 4 Kansas State, Saturday

11. TEXAS (3-2) lost to No. 10 Oklahoma, 63-14. Texans never forget. They remember the Alamo and they certainly won’t forget this monstrous loss to the hated Sooners. Next: at Colorado, Saturday

12. FLORIDA (5-1) defeated Louisiana State, 41-9. The next two weeks could go a long way toward determining the Gators’ fate. First comes Auburn, then Georgia. Next: No. 15 Auburn, Saturday

13. WASHINGTON (4-1) defeated No. 23 Oregon State, 33-30. Huskies go 1-1 against the Oregon schools, stay in Rose Bowl race and spoil Dennis Erickson’s return to Seattle. Next: at Arizona State, Saturday

14. TEXAS CHRISTIAN (5-0) defeated Hawaii, 41-21. Chalk up another victory for the Horned Frogs, who have the nation’s best nickname and second-longest winning streak. Next: at Tulsa, Saturday

15. AUBURN (5-1) lost to No. 20 Mississippi State, 17-10. Tommy Tuberville apologized to fans who made the trip to see this loss. Next week they have an even longer trip. Next: at No. 12 Florida, Saturday

16. UCLA (4-1) did not play. Things are looking up for the Bruins. Not only do they finish the season against USC, their next next opponent, California, has lost five in a row. Next: at California, Saturday

17. SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI (4-1) defeated South Florida, 41-7. Standout runner Derrick Nix missed the game, but against the outclassed Bulls, he wasn’t missed at all. Next: at Tulane, Saturday

18. USC (3-2) lost to Arizona, 31-15. It looks as if the rankings were wrong. It was the Wildcats, not the Trojans, who should have been ranked. That will be corrected this week. Next: Oregon, Saturday

19. GEORGIA (4-1) defeated No. 21 Tennessee, 21-10. Bulldog fans celebrated early in this game, rushing the field with 1:13 left and attempting to tear down a goal post. Next: Vanderbilt, Saturday

20. MISSISSIPPI STATE (4-1) defeated No. 15 Auburn, 17-10. That’s two big victories in a row at home for the Bulldogs. Now let’s see them keep it going on the road. Next: at Louisiana State, Oct. 21

21. TENNESSEE (2-3) lost to No. 19 Georgia, 21-10. The Volunteers take a week off after a third consecutive defeat. It doesn’t get any easier, as Alabama comes to Knoxville. Next: Alabama, Oct. 21

22. NORTHWESTERN (5-1) defeated Indiana, 52-33. Maybe if the Wildcats could soften their nonconference schedule and not play the likes of TCU, they could go undefeated. Next: Purdue, Saturday

23. OREGON STATE (4-1) lost to No. 13 Washington, 33-30. A game effort for the Beavers in Dennis Erickson’s return to Seattle, but the kicking game isn’t up to par. Next: Stanford, Saturday

24. WISCONSIN (3-3) defeated No. 8 Ohio State, 23-7. It doesn’t get any easier for the Badgers, who must play four of their final six games on the road. Next: at Michigan State, Saturday

25. NOTRE DAME (3-2) defeated Stanford, 20-14. After playing four of their first five games at home, the Fighting Irish must play four of their last six on the road. Next: at Navy, Saturday
