HUNTINGTON BEACH
The city will honor 14 residents today for their dedication to the community during the 29th annual Public Safety Awards at Waterfront Hilton Beach Resort, 21100 Pacific Coast Highway.
The awards ceremony will be held during a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona as guest speaker. The medal of valor will be presented to Officer Nicholas Ekovich, who was wounded in a gunfight Sept. 3, 1999. Resident Mitzi Douillard, who made the 911 call for that incident, will receive the award of heroism.
Huntington Beach lifeguards, police and marine safety officers, firefighters and other employees also will be honored.
