Hartsburg Wants Stars to Do the Frustrating

Mighty Duck Coach Craig Hartsburg measured his words carefully before speaking Wednesday morning.

“This is not a criticism of Paul and Teemu,” Hartsburg said, referring to all-star wingers Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. “But sometimes when you’re not scoring or producing, you’ve got to get back to basics and get back to playing a hard and simple game.

“They should be frustrating the other team instead of getting frustrated. I think that’s a little of what’s happened.”

Kariya and Selanne were blanked in the season’s first two games and began Wednesday’s game against the Boston Bruins playing on different lines. Kariya played with center Matt Cullen and right wing Marty McInnis and Selanne was teamed with center Antti Aalto and left wing Mike Leclerc.

Kariya and Selanne played together on the first power-play unit and picked up their first points of the season. Kariya assisted on Selanne’s goal that gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead 13:59 into the game.

Forward Jonas Ronnqvist went for a light skate Wednesday morning, but could not play against the Bruins because of a strained right knee. He was injured when he was struck by a puck during the warm-up skate before Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Blues.

Ronnqvist hopes to play Saturday against the New Jersey Devils, the first game on a five-game East Coast trip.
