Neighbor Saves Man From Fire

A Buena Park man was rescued from his burning apartment by a neighbor who kicked in the door and dragged him to safety, authorities said Monday.

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Paul Hunter said the man was incapacitated by smoke inhalation and unable to escape the fire in his bedroom about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The man could be heard coughing and smoke was billowing from a window when Sabino Casares, a neighbor, kicked in the door to rescue him, Hunter said.

“Since [the victim] was in a smoky environment, he wasn’t getting himself out, so the bystander got him out of there,” Hunter said.

The victim, who was not identified, was transported to West Anaheim Medical Center and treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire, which remains under investigation, caused about $20,000 in damage to the apartment’s bedroom, authorities said.
