Schools Can Turn Pages to Foster Cultural Pride

Share

Regarding: “A New Chapter on Cultural Pride” (Sept. 24).

As a Latino educator who attended schools in Los Angeles Unified School District in the bygone days of “Dick and Jane,” I also was never exposed to books that dealt with my culture and history. So as Latino students read books written by Latino writers, and as they see their histories reflected in those books, they will begin to feel pride in their culture, in themselves as readers and writers and may become future Latino literary giants.

No longer can educators who work with large numbers of Latino students say that books written by Latino authors are not available. If those school districts with large numbers of Latino students would require the reading of books written by Latino writers, the reading and writing tests scores in those school districts might improve.
