Matilija Dam Removal
Re “Babbitt Takes Symbolic First Step in Removal of Silt-Choked Matilija Dam,” Oct. 13.
Only in California could the dismantling of an obsolete structure that no longer performs its function, the Matilija Dam, be considered a major environmental victory.
Once again, symbolism triumphs over substance. It is time for bold measures on the environment. Tear down the Hetch-Hetchy dam and restore the drowned valley that John Muir once compared to Yosemite valley. Breech dams and free their impoundments on the Columbia River system.
Although the Matilija Dam removal is a locally important victory, much remains to be done. We can’t wait decades or there will be no salmon left in the Pacific Northwest to save.
