Stanford Ends Irvine’s Water Polo Win Streak

UC Irvine split two games Saturday at the Northern California men’s water polo tournament in Stockton and will play a fifth-place semifinal against Long Beach State today.

Fifth-ranked Stanford stopped No. 2 Irvine’s five-game winning streak with a 6-5 victory. Jeff Guyman and Peter Osborn scored fourth-quarter goals to lead the Cardinal. Dan Hayes had two goals and Hipp had 11 saves for the Anteaters.

UCI (11-4) opened the tournament with a 16-6 victory over UC Davis. Tony Grosso scored four goals, Jeff Powers scored three and goalie Dan Hipp had eight saves.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Point Loma Nazarene 1, Concordia 0--Josh Barton’s goal in the 10th minute proved to be the winner for host Point Loma (10-5-1, 5-3). Ryan Hopkins made five saves for Concordia (4-13, 2-6).

Vanguard 2, Westmont 1--Devin Adams scored in the first half and Josh McLeish broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the second half to win it for visiting Vanguard (9-4-1, 6-1-1).

McLeish took a pass from Esaul Mendoza, beat one defender and scored into the right corner of the net.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer:

Westmont 2, Vanguard 0--Janel Kaden and Janee Andre scored goals for host Westmont (11-2-2, 4-0-2).

Goaltender Robin Landauer had nine saves for Vanguard (8-8, 2-5), which was outshot, 20-10.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Boise State 3, UC Irvine 1--Erika Denison had 13 kills and Chanda McLeod had 49 assists and 22 digs for visiting UC Irvine (6-11, 1-8), which lost, 13-15, 15-3, 15-10, 15-7.

Utah State 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Jamie Ivers had 12 kills and nine digs and Be Holcombe had 10 kills for the visiting Titans (7-14, 2-7), who were swept, 15-9, 15-13, 15-3.
