Blackhawks Get Dose of Turek And Are Left Feeling the Blues

Scott Young scored his league-leading eighth goal and Roman Turek made 16 saves to record his 10th career shutout as the St. Louis Blues edged the Chicago Blackhawks, 1-0, Saturday night at St. Louis.

Young entered the game tied for the league lead in goals with Colorado’s Peter Forsberg. He snapped the scoreless tie with three minutes left in the second period when he broke in on a two on one with Pierre Turgeon and one-timed Turgeon’s pass by Chicago goalie Robbie Tallas. Sean Hill also assisted on the goal.

The goal gave Young eight in eight games, and nine points overall for the right wing, whose career high for goals in a season is 30 with Quebec in 1992-93. He scored 24 goals last year.

The shutout was the second in four games for St. Louis, which has allowed just three goals during that span. Turek’s backup, Brent Johnson, had the other shutout, blanking the Minnesota Wild 2-0 on Oct. 13.

Alexei Zhamnov had the best scoring chance of the night for Chicago when he corralled a loose puck all alone at the top of the left circle with just over two minutes remaining. But Turek stopped his wrist shot and cleared the rebound.

Detroit 5, Buffalo 4--Brendan Shanahan scored on a power play with 32.6 seconds left in overtime to give the Red Wings a victory over the Sabres at Detroit.

Shanahan put a screened shot past Dominik Hasek 19 seconds after a knee-to-knee collision between Detroit’s Sergei Fedorov and Buffalo’s Jay McKee.

Fedorov went down hard, and McKee went to the penalty box, setting up Detroit’s third power-play goal of the night.

Pat Verbeek scored two goals and Fedorov added two assists for Detroit, which also got goals from Doug Brown and Martin Lapointe.

Montreal 5, Carolina 2--Brian Savage had his sixth career hat trick as he and linemates Martin Rucinsky and Trevor Linden accounted for all of the Canadiens’ offense with 14 points between them in extending their home winning streak to four games at Montreal.

Montreal also extended its unbeaten streak to four games to raise its record above .500 (4-3-1) for the first time since November 9, 1998, when the Canadiens opened the season with a 6-5-2 mark.

Savage, who also had two assists, completed his first hat trick since last Oct. 14 at Philadelphia when he scored his fifth goal of the season into an empty net with 55 seconds left on a pass from Rucinsky, who had a goal and four assists.

Toronto 2, Calgary 1--Curtis Joseph continued his dominance over the Flames as he made 32 saves in the Maple Leafs’ victory at Calgary, Canada.

The Flames outshot the Maple Leafs 33-19, but were unable to solve Joseph, who improved to 19-5-3 in his career against Calgary. Toronto built a 2-0 lead with first-period goals by Steve Thomas and Tie Domi, each scoring their first of the season.

Jarome Iginla cut it to 2-1 at 15:26 of the third, but Calgary lost for the fourth time in five home games this season.

San Jose 5, Nashville 3--Scott Thornton started a three-goal flurry in the second period of his 500th NHL game, and the Sharks ended the Predators’ unbeaten string at four games with a victory at Nashville, Tenn.

Thornton’s wraparound goal 1:09 into the second period beat Nashville goalie Mike Dunham and tied the game at 2-2.

Mark Smith put the Sharks ahead 3-2 with his first NHL point on a deflection, and Tony Granato made it 4-2 on a rebound 8:52 into the second.

Pittsburgh 5, Columbus 2--Robert Lang scored two power-play goals as the Penguins beat the Blue Jackets at Pittsburgh.

Jaromir Jagr scored his seventh goal of the season into an empty net with 1:21 left in the third period for his only point of the game.

Atlanta 6, Ottawa 6--Donald Audette had a hat trick and the Thrashers rallied from a four-goal deficit to tie the Senators at Kanata, Ontario.

Ottawa’s Andreas Dackell also scored three goals, while Shawn McEachern and Alexei Yashin collected four assists each as the Senators stayed unbeaten (4-0-3).

New Jersey 7, Tampa Bay 2--The Devils got goals from seven different players and Patrik Elias had three assists in an easy win at East Rutherford, N.J.

Petr Sykora, Randy McKay, Sergei Nemchinov, Ken Sutton, Brian Rafalski, Jim McKenzie and Sergei Brylin all scored for New Jersey.

Washington 4, New York Islanders 4--Andrei Nikolishin’s second goal of the game and the Capitals’ third on the power play with 5:38 left in regulation helped them earn the tie at Washington.

Phoenix 3, Vancouver 2--Jeremy Roenick scored 16 seconds into overtime at Vancouver to give the Coyotes their fourth consecutive victory.
