Police have arrested a Buena Park man on suspicion of severely beating another player over a foul call during a pickup basketball game at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center, authorities said.

Willis Ray Williams, 39, was arrested Thursday afternoon at his home, said Fountain Valley police Sgt. Jim Perry.

Williams was booked on one count of assault with force likely to produce great bodily harm. Police accuse him of smashing his fist without warning into player James Hundley’s face on Oct. 8.

Hundley fell to the pavement while Williams allegedly stood over him and said, “Now, that’s a foul.” Hundley was taken to UCI Medical Center where he underwent brain surgery.

Hundley, who is recovering at his Garden Grove home, said he doesn’t remember playing the game before the incident. Hundley said his memory is improving daily and that he might even return to the basketball court.
