OUTLOOK
If El Toro is going to contend for a playoff spot, its young players will have to mature quickly. The Chargers return only four starters--the least of any South Coast League team. “We can’t have juniors and sophomores with big eyes on Friday night or we’re in trouble,” Milner said. One of the juniors who can’t afford to be intimidated is Kirchmeyer, the starting junior varsity quarterback last year who won the job over the summer. “He’s accurate and he has a strong arm,” Milner said. Abadilla, the only returning starter on offense, anchors a young line and junior Nick Walsh will start at tailback. The defense, led by returning starters Barger, Mascari and Hill, should be solid. Mascari (seven interceptions, second-team all-league) and Hill are two of the better cover guys in the league and they could allow Milner to do a lot of blitzing. Barger, who Milner calls a “physical specimen,” could have a breakout year at tackle. Milner didn’t exactly pick the best opener for a young team--second-ranked Edison.
