Promoting Yourself Is Not the Point

If Jorge Paez was the clown prince of boxing, Bob Arum is undoubtedly the king. First, he says Oscar De La Hoya should retire because he “truly likes the kid.” What does that imply about the other boxers that he promotes? Then, he goes on this tirade about all the money he has “made” for De La Hoya, simply because De La Hoya wants to continue boxing but without Arum.

Now, I’ve heard of boxers with a glass jaw, but this is the first promoter I’ve seen with a glass head. The only interest Arum has ever had in De La Hoya is money. If the man had even one ounce of character, he’d settle with Oscar and let him go about his business. He has made a fortune off him already, as anyone who promoted him would have, but too much is never enough for a greedy, self-centered slob like Bob Arum. This man is the black eye of boxing everyone’s been talking about, and he always has been.
