Police Shoot Driver, 83, Who Pointed Gun at Them

Two police officers shot and wounded an 83-year-old man during a traffic stop Wednesday evening, after he pointed a gun at them as they impounded his Mercedes-Benz, police said.

The driver was pulled over for speeding near the intersection of San Fernando Road and Sheldon Street by a pair of motorcycle officers, said Officer Don Cox, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. The officers wrote a speeding ticket and were in the process of impounding his car about 6 p.m. when the man pulled out a handgun, Cox said.

Both officers fired their weapons, police said, and the driver, who did not fire his, was hit at least three times in the arm, leg and foot. He was in stable condition Wednesday night at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, Cox said.

The officers impounded the car because he had no driver’s license.
