Freshwater

Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Scott Rubin, Newbury Park, caught an 11-pound, three-ounce striped bass using a sardine at 65 feet in the ski arm. The striper bite is slow, though. Largemouth bass have been active in the shallows early and late, but the hotter weather since midweek slowed them some.

PYRAMID LAKE--Catfish and bluegill are providing fair action, while largemouth and striped bass fishing is tough. Try plastic worms for largemouth and anchovies at 30-plus feet for stripers.

Orange County

ANAHEIM LAKE--Catfish action is good and some of the fish are pushing five pounds. Top cat was an 11-5 caught on mackerel and night crawlers.

IRVINE LAKE--Catfish are active early and late only, but you might pull one out of a deep hole during the day. A 14-3 caught on mackerel tops the list. Bass fishing is fair early and late, and an 11-3 was caught on a plastic worm by Gabby Hayes, West Covina.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--More than 1,000 pounds of catfish are being stocked today so the bite should be good this weekend.

OSO RESERVOIR--Bass fishing remains consistent but the fish are a little deep, biting mostly on plastic worms. Catfish are biting at the dam.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Trout remain the best bet. Doug Lee, Ojai, four trout totaling 12 pounds, on night crawlers at 50 feet. Bass fishing is fair to good early and late.

LAKE PIRU--Trout anglers using night crawlers at the dam are catching a few, but they’re going 50 feet down to get them. Bass action is slow to fair, with spinnerbaits and crankbaits in the backs of coves best.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout remain deep and trollers using downriggers or lead-core line are doing best. Bait fishermen using paste baits are getting a few.

San Bernardino County

BIG BEAR LAKE--Mornings are cold but the trout don’t mind. Trollers are finding fish throughout the lake using Needlefish, Thomas Buoyants and Rapalas. Few limits.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Trout and crappie are fairly active, and crappie jigs are getting some nice trout. A few pushed five pounds.

JESS RANCH LAKES--Trout between 1-3 pounds are biting sporadically on rainbow Power Bait and night crawlers. Catfish are active too. Some bass.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--Catfish are providing the most action and an 18-pounder caught on mackerel tops the list.

LAKE PERRIS--Largemouth bass are getting more active, but no lunkers reported. The marina area and east end are best. Bluegill action remains steady for those using worms. Catfish action remains fair and an occasional trout is being caught at the dam.

LAKE SKINNER--Largemouth bass and catfish are pulling the most line, but striped bass are active too. Plastic worms and night crawlers are best for largemouth bass and anchovies are good for catfish and stripers.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--The average trout catch is only one per day. Best bets remain catfish and crappie.

DIXON LAKE--Mostly catfish at night (Fridays and Saturdays only) and bluegill during the day. Nothing special.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--An 11-4 bass caught at Lower Otay on a dark plastic worm tops the list. A 10-2 was caught at El Capitan and a 7-6 at San Vicente. Bass fishing has improved. Other species are slow.

Eastern Sierra

In the Bishop area, the high country above town is an excellent place to be, except for the 40-degree temperatures before the sun hits the hills. The colors are changing and the fish are in the mood to feed. South Lake’s browns and brooks are finally showing along with rainbows. North Lake and Sabrina Lake are producing, too, as is Bishop Creek. In the Mammoth Lakes area, Crowley Lake is still good and McGee Bay is still the place to wet a fly. Caddis larvae and pheasant tails are tops. Convict Lake produced a 5-7, caught on a Mepps. The basin lakes are fair to good; Hot Creek remains very good; the Upper Owens is fast but still fair to good, and the San Joaquin River is great but you have to walk because the shuttle is closed for the season.

On the June Lake Loop, strong winds made fishing difficult over the holiday weekend, but Power Bait produced a 5-1 at Silver, a 5-0 at June and a 4-1 for Hemet’s Ryan Richart at Gull. Fishing remains fair to good. At Bridgeport, the wind has subsided and fishing the namesake reservoir is fair one day, slow the next. Boaters at Buckeye Bay using Power Bait or night crawlers are doing best. Twin Lakes are fair on the same baits. Virginia Lakes are good for those casting Thomas Buoyants and other small spinners. The East Walker River remains the best bet. The flow is at 160 cfs and small nymphs and midges are producing well for fly fishermen.

Saltwater

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--59 anglers (3 boats): 34 albacore, 4 ling cod, 150 red rock cod, 250 rockfish.

PORT SAN LUIS (Patriot Sportfishing)--18 anglers (1 boat): 18 rock cod, 18 red rock cod, 144 bolina, 9 ling cod.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--11 anglers (1 boat): 43 calico bass, 1 barracuda, 25 mackerel, 10 rockfish, 1 sheephead.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--55 anglers (4 boats): 16 white sea bass, 128 whitefish, 2 sole, 1 half-moon perch, 3 sheephead, 48 sculpin, 235 rockfish, 1 halibut, 95 calico bass, 16 barracuda.

PORT HUENEME--58 anglers (3 boats): 1 white sea bass, 1 calico bass, 2 sheephead, 44 rockfish, 13 sand bass, 20 sculpin, 75 whitefish.

MARINA DEL REY--103 anglers (5 boats): 1 yellowtail, 9 halibut, 1 barracuda, 151 sand bass, 10 calico bass, 194 sculpin, 2 sheephead.

REDONDO BEACH--78 anglers (5 boats): 206 calico bass, 34 sand bass, 4 barracuda, 3 Spanish jack, 318 bonito, 12 sculpin, 19 whitefish, 41 rockfish, 1 ling cod, 1 sheephead, 1 white sea bass.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--31 anglers (2 boats): 104 whitefish, 24 rockfish, 8 sculpin, 2 sand bass. (22nd St. Landing)--48 anglers (2 boats): 24 calico bass, 32 barracuda, 4 halibut, 60 sculpin, 7 sheephead, 25 whitefish, 160 rockfish.

LONG BEACH (Sportfishing/Berth 55)--86 anglers (5 boats): 48 yellowtail, 98 calico bass, 50 sand bass, 7 barracuda, 43 rockfish, 32 whitefish, 15 sheephead, 28 sculpin, 10 red snapper, 9 salmon grouper, 32 sole, 72 bonito, 46 mackerel.
