Cancer Society to Hold Relays

Share

The American Cancer Society will hold several Relay for Life fund-raising events beginning today at five Ventura County locations.

As part of a nationwide event, the relays are the society’s single largest fund-raising activity of the year.

Relay for Life is a 24-hour program that features food, live entertainment, activities and a luminary event, which consists of reading people’s names who have won or lost their battle with cancer while lighting luminaries in their honor.

Each team involved raises sponsorship contributions that go toward finding a cure for cancer. Teams will keep at least one person walking around the track at all times during the 24-hour period. Last year, the Camarillo event raised nearly $40,000.

Today and Sunday, relay activities will be held at Adolfo Camarillo High School and Oxnard High School. On Sept. 16 and 17, a relay will be held at Newbury Park High School; Oct. 7 and 8 at Royal High School in Simi Valley and Nov. 18 and 19 at Moorpark College.

Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. for each event except at Newbury Park High School, where events begin at noon.
