Welding Blamed for Church Fire

A fire in the steeple of a Van Nuys church caused minor damage to the structure, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said.

Welders repairing iron works in the steeple of Community Bible Church on Saturday inadvertently left embers that ignited the blaze Sunday morning, department spokesman Bob Collis said. The fire was reported at just before 8 a.m. and was extinguished within 15 minutes, he said.

“Plumbers and welders keep us in business, unbeknownst to them,” Collis said.

No one was in the church at the time of the blaze, Collis said, and no injuries were reported.
