Steinberg Reaches Third Round Before Losing in Mid-Amateur

Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys advanced to the third round of match play before losing on Tuesday in the 20th U.S. Mid-Amateur Golf Championships at Hot Springs, Va.

Wayne Raath of South Africa defeated Steinberg, four-time Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur champion, on the 19th hole on the Cascades Course at the Homestead.

In the second round Tuesday morning, Steinberg defeated John Pate of Santa Barbara, 1999 SCGA champion, 4 and 3.

VOLLEYBALL

* Kasey Jungwirth of Camarillo, a 6-foot outside hitter for Cal State Los Angeles, was selected NCAA Division II player of the week.

Jungwirth has helped Cal State L.A. to a 10-0 record, including road victories over No. 7 Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Stanislaus. She has averaged 5.7 kills and 2.5 digs a game while attacking at a .347 percentage. Last week, she had 34 kills in six games and only eight hitting errors on 75 attempts.

* Alexis Cormier of Cal State Northridge has been chosen Big Sky Conference player of the week.

The 5-9 junior outside hitter from Fresno was all-tournament in helping the Matadors win the Hofstra Invitational last week. She averaged 4.8 kills and 4.6 digs per game in five matches.

Cormier leads the Big Sky in kills per game.

* Megan O’Connell, a three-year starter at Louisville High, has committed to Hofstra.

The 6-foot-1 O’Connell chose Hofstra over Air Force and Boise State.
