Santiago Left in the Dark by San Dimas

Things went dark early in Santiago’s game Friday at San Dimas. A first-quarter power outage caused a 30-minute delay.

Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, an electrician was able to turn the juice back on. And once the lights came on to stay, Santiago went out for good, suffering through an abysmal first quarter on the way to a 47-0 loss in front of 1,000 spectators at San Dimas High School.

Nothing went right for Santiago (0-2) in a nightmarish first quarter. The Cavaliers committed five fumbles, compiled 18 yards in total offense and allowed San Dimas (1-1) four touchdowns and one field goal.

At the end of the quarter, Santiago trailed, 30-0.

“I’m very disappointed in how we performed tonight,” said Santiago Coach Bart Recktenwald. “We’ll have to look at the film and see if anything positive came out of this game. It’s hard to think of anything right now.”

Besides the power outage, which Recktenwald said crippled his team’s momentum, the coach said Santiago had a hard time preparing after getting to the field late. He blamed the layout of San Dimas’ “horrible facility.”

San Dimas, a much quicker team, took advantage of Santiago’s beleaguered defense, amassing 310 total yards in the first half. San Dimas quarterback Ryan Repp threw for four touchdowns.

Wide receiver Chris Ward was his favorite target, catching touchdown passes of 45, 71 and 65 yards. Repp also connected with Chris Greenwade for a 27-yard scoring strike, and also rushed for a 34-yard score. Running back Kevin Deal added a seven-yard scoring run, and Scott Ehret kicked two field goals, including a 40-yarder.

One of the few bright spots in an otherwise dark evening for Santiago was cornerback Richard Perez, who intercepted two passes.
